Neither Marc-Antoine Desjardins nor his party has announced why he is dropping out.
Marc-Antoine Desjardins, who was a candidate for mayor of Montreal under the Ralliement pour Montréal party until it joined forces with Balarama Holness’s Movement Montreal, has withdrawn his candidacy for mayor of Outremont borough, the city’s election body announced on Tuesday.
In a statement sent to some media outlets including La Presse , Desjardins said he was dropping out “on principle” and he was “totally dissociating” himself from Movement Montreal and Holness’s statements on Oct. 12.
Desjardins did not specify which statements, but on Oct. 12, Holness said he would put forward a referendum on a bilingual status for the city . Desjardins’s party Ralliement pour Montréal had made protection of the French language a key part of its platform before the merger.
