Construction to improve safety starts Tuesday on Highway 440 near Highway 15, where four people died in a pileup in 2019.
In 2019, four people were killed and 15 injured in an accident on Highway 440 West, near Highway 15. The fiery multi-vehicle crash involved two tractor-trailers and at least seven cars that were travelling in the westbound lane.
The pileup occurred near the exit leading to the interchange for Highway 15, which runs north to the Laurentians and south to Montreal.
The first phase of the project will add an entrance south of the Highway 440 overpass from the Highway 15 northbound service roads. This will reduce backups and improve traffic flow.
The work is scheduled to be finished next summer.
During the second phase of the work, workers will build an overhead ramp from the 440 West express lanes to Highway 15 North and improve the exit at Industriel Blvd.
About 300,000 vehicles travel daily through the interchange of Highways 440 and 15, Transport Quebec says.
