Uganda’sU-20 coach Morley Byekwaso said he is confident his team will qualify for the knockout stage at the Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Mauritania 2021.
Uganda Hippos, the regional CECAFA champions are pooled in Group A alongside Mozambique, Cameroon and hosts Mauritania.
“Although we have been pooled in a strong group, we have what it takes to make it to the knockout stage,” said Byekwaso, a former national team player.
Byekwaso says they are currently putting in a lot of work with the preparations so that they build a solid team. “We are the Champions of East and Central Africa. We have to compete and represent the region well,” added the coach.
“We need to be at our best to defeat the best teams and we are confident we shall make it through to the knockout stage.”
Striker Ivan Bogere who won the golden Boot at the regional CECAFA U-20 qualifiers made it clear that they have a strong team which can lift the U-20 AFCON title. “We just need to treat every game with a lot of seriousness like a final,” he added.
To qualify for the U-20 AFCON, Uganda Hippos emerged champions in the regional CECAFA qualifiers. They were held to a goalless draw by South Sudan before thrashing Burundi 6-1 and arch-rivals Kenya 3-1 at the semifinals. In the final they beat hosts Tanzania 4-1.
